Introduction

For as long as ransomware has existed, there has been a human somewhere in the loop — at the keyboard, writing the script, making tactical decisions. That changed sometime in the spring of 2026.

The operation exploited CVE-2025-3248, a CVSS 9.8 missing-authentication flaw in Langflow — the popular open-source AI app and agent workflow builder — to gain initial access. How JADEPUFFER Worked

The attack unfolded across two distinct targets: an internet-facing Langflow instance (initial access host), and a separate production database server running MySQL and Alibaba’s Nacos configuration service — the true objective.

Phase 1: The Langflow Instance

Phase 2: The Production Database

Armed with harvested credentials, JADEPUFFER pivoted to the intended target: a production MySQL server. It logged in as root, then exploited CVE-2021-29441 — a 2021 authentication bypass in Nacos that relies on a default signing key unchanged since 2020 — to plant its own admin account.

The agent encrypted all 1,342 Nacos configuration items, dropped the original tables, and left a ransom note in a table named README_RANSOM. It generated a random encryption key, printed it once, then never stored or transmitted it — meaning the victim cannot recover their data even by paying.

Sysdig counted more than 600 distinct, purposeful payloads across the operation.
