What Claude for Teachers Offers

The package includes not just the chat interface, but also Claude Code and Claude Cowork — Anthropic’s agentic coding and document-processing tools — which means teachers can automate lesson planning, differentiate materials for varied reading levels, and analyze class data without touching a spreadsheet.
The product connects to Learning Commons, giving Claude direct access to academic standards across all 50 US states. Below each standard are the smaller competencies and the typical learning progression, so lesson plans are scaffolded, not generic. Privacy and Trust
Anthropic is positioning privacy as a differentiator. Training is off for verified teacher accounts, and student data is protected under a K-12 Data Processing Addendum written to comply with FERPA. The company is working with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) to develop industry-wide “Gold Standards” for K-12 AI safety and privacy.

The teaching skills — co-developed with Learning Commons and tested with teachers at Prospect Schools in Brooklyn — have been released as an open-source repository on GitHub. Anthropic also published a technical write-up on how the skills were evaluated, aimed at other builders in the education space.
A free, model-agnostic AI Fluency for K-12 Teachers course, co-created with Teach for America, is available through Anthropic’s learning platform. A train-the-trainer module was co-developed with the AFT.
The Competitive Landscape
Claude for Teachers enters a crowded field. OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teachers, Microsoft’s Elevate for Educators, and Google’s AI Educator Series all compete for the same audience. Anthropic’s differentiator is the combination of free premium-tier access (including agentic tools), standards alignment, and privacy commitments backed by union partnerships.
The initiative is part of Anthropic’s broader partnership with the Gates Foundation to co-develop AI tools for K-12 education. A pilot evaluation is planned in the Detroit Public Schools Community District, studying impact on educator well-being and practice.
