As of today, July 13, 2026, Claude Fable 5 is no longer included in Claude Pro and Max subscriptions. Every Fable 5 token now draws from a separate credit balance — billed at API-equivalent rates. The transition marks the end of a two-week promotional window and resets expectations for what a $20 or $200/month Claude plan actually buys.
The timeline
After the US government suspended access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on June 12 over export-control concerns, Anthropic struck a deal and restored access on July 1. The restoration came with a catch: Fable 5 usage was capped at 50% of weekly limits and was only included through July 7. When backlash hit, Anthropic extended the deadline to July 12. That deadline has now passed.
As Anthropic engineer Thariq Shihipar explained on X, the company “aims to put Fable back on subscriptions as soon as capacity allows” — but no date has been published.

For context, a heavy Claude Code session with Fable 5 can burn through millions of output tokens in a single afternoon. Users are already adapting with “advisor” patterns: let Fable 5 plan the architecture, then switch to Sonnet 5 (still included) for execution.

Enterprise plans have been on a credits-only model for Fable since July 1 already; this change primarily affects Pro and Max subscribers who enjoyed two bonus weeks of included frontier access.
The competitive pressure
The timing is not coincidental. OpenAI launched GPT-5.6 Sol on July 9, with Terminal-Bench parity at roughly one-third the cost per task versus Fable 5 API pricing. Anthropic’s extension of included Fable through July 12 was widely read as a retention play — buy time while subscribers evaluated whether the upgrade was worth it. Now the gloves are off.
What to do
- Enable usage credits in Claude Settings now if you haven’t already.
- Set Sonnet 5 as default for daily coding work — it’s included and highly capable.
- Reserve Fable 5 for hard problems where its reasoning edge justifies the cost.
- Benchmark against alternatives — GPT-5.6 and Opus 4.8 both offer frontier performance at lower per-token cost.
For the open-source community, Anthropic maintains a separate Claude for OSS program with expanded limits unaffected by this consumer-plan change.
