The Billing Split: What Changes Today
Anthropic announced on May 13-14 that it was restructuring Claude subscription billing, and the change takes effect today. The core shift: Agent SDK, claude -p, Claude Code GitHub Actions, and all third-party agent applications — including OpenClaw, Conductor, Zed, and Jean — are removed from the existing subscription usage pool and moved to a brand-new, independently billed “Agent” credit system.

These credits are billed at full API rates — meaning programmatic usage that was previously bundled into the flat subscription fee now costs per-token at Anthropic’s standard pricing. For heavy agentic workloads, the effective price increase ranges from 12x to 175x compared to the old all-inclusive model.
What Stays the Same
Interactive use remains untouched. Claude Code in terminal (interactive mode), Claude Cowork, and the Claude chat interface continue to draw from the original subscription usage limits. Anthropic’s framing is that these limits are now “reserved for interactive use” — a deliberate separation between human-in-the-loop work and autonomous agent execution.
Action Required
Users who received a June 8 email from Anthropic must claim their agent credits to continue automated workloads. Without claiming, agent pipelines will hit quota walls immediately.
Model Retirement: Opus 4 and Sonnet 4 Are Gone
The second change landing today is the retirement of two Claude generation-4 models from the API:

Why Both Changes Land on the Same Day
The timing is not a coincidence. Anthropic is mid-launch-cycle: Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Opus 4.8 arrived in late May, Fable 5 and Mythos 5 launched June 9 (and were suspended June 13 in the export-control saga), and more models are on the roadmap. Retiring the generation-4 originals clears the namespace. The billing split simultaneously acknowledges the economic reality that agent-driven usage — where a single prompt can spawn hundreds of autonomous tool calls — is fundamentally different from interactive chat, and the old flat-rate model was unsustainable.
